“Naturally Speaking #1”

Bryan Wilson

63×67, oil on canvas

This is the inaugural work for my “Naturally Speaking…” series which highlights Black women’s natural hair texture. The premise is to promote the appreciation of natural hairstyles, but to also indicate the significance of the hair being natural (as opposed to chemically altered, or “processed” hair). The hair itself is symbolic of the strength and inherent value of the wearer. This particular piece celebrates these qualities in a specific individual from the greater Charlotte community: a well known designer, entrepreneur, and media personality who proudly embraces her natural hair and, consequently, exudes a very natural confidence and self love.
